IN CLINICAL TRIALS THE NUTRIENTS CONTAINED IN "MEMORIES WITH SEANOL" HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO BE EFFECTIVE IN THE TREATMENT OF ALZHEIMERS DISEASE

HUPERZINE-A

The moss Huperzia serrata has been used in China since recorded history.  Recently the administration of Huperzine A, an alkaloid isolated from the moss, has produced encouraging results in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Experimental Double-blind Study:  50 pts. with Alzheimer's disease were given orally .2mg.(4 tablet) of Huperzine A and 53 pts. were given placebo for 8 weeks.  About 58% (29/50) of pts. treated withn Huperzine A showed improvements in their memory, cognitive, and behavioral functions.  The efficacy of Huperzine A was better than placebo (36%, 19/53).  No severe side effects were noted.

"Efficacy of tablet Huperzine A on memory, cognition and behavior in Alzheimer's disease, Acta Pharmacologica Sinica "16:391-5, 1995).

2. PHOSPHATIDYLSERINE

In 51 Alzheimers patients treated for 12 weeks with phosphatidylserine at 100 mg., 3 times daily versus placebo there was a significant improvement in several cognitive measures in those treated with the drug(nutrient) compared to placebo.

"Effects of Phosphatidylserine on Alzheimers Disease" Psychopharmacological Bulletin 1992 "28(1) 6/66.

3.  BACOPA

Bacopa is an herb that has been used for centuries in ARYUVEDIC MEDICINE to enhance mental functioning.  A series of recent small studies has demonstrated the ability of Bacopa to support enhanced cognitive functioning.

4. SEANOL-P

Seanol is a polyphenol extract of brown algae grown off the coasts of Korea and Japan.  In a study at the Mirae Institute in Japan and Korea 300 mild to moderate Alzheimers disease patients were given Seanol daily for 3 months.  After 3 months 60 percent were able to resume independent living activities.

5. DMAE- DMAE is noted for its remarkable brain-enhancement effects.  DMAE works by accelerating the brain's synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which in turn plays a key role in maximizing mental ability as well as preventing loss of memory in aging adults.  Riker Labs developed a prescription drug called Deanol which has very similar effects and is chemically very similar and marketed it for learning problems, shortened attention span, and reading and speech difficulties. from "Smart Drugs and Nutrients-Volume I" Ward Dean M.D. and John Morgenthaler

6.  Ginko Biloba is widely used in Europe to enhance decling mental fuctioning associated with dementia and alzheimers disease.

7.VINPOCETENE

VINPOCETENE IS AN EXTRACT OF THE PERIWINKLE PLANT (HERB).

Summary:  In a review of 39 articles evaluating Vinpocetene use in treatment of dementia, memory deficits or cognitive impairment a total of 327 subjects in the Vinpocetene or placebo group participated in the 3 trials selected.  The dose ranges were between 15 and 60 mg.  In all 3 studies, there was a significant improvement with the use of Vinpocetene in cognitive function in individuals suffering dementia or other cerebrovascular diseases.

"Efficacy of Vinpocetene in the Management of Cognitive Impairment and Memory Loss," Wollsclaeger B, JANA, Summer 2001;4(2);25-30.

The Gedeon Richter company of Hungary markets vinpocetene as Cavinton in Europe.  They have funded one hundred studies on vinpocetine.  The studies confirmed the efficacy of vinpocetene for memory problems, acute stroke, aphasia (loss of power of expression), apraxia (inability to coordinate movements), motor disorders, dizziness and other cerebro-vestibular (inner ear) problems, and headache.  Gedeon Richter promotes vinpocetene as the only drug (nutrient) that improves cerebral metabolism (glucose and oxygen uptake) and cerebral microcirculation.  Gedeon Richter also claims that vinpocetene selectively increases blood flow to the impaired area without lowering blood flow to the other parts of the body.
